About The Neighborhood
Waukegan is one of the oldest communities in Illinois. The community began as a Potawatomi Indian settlement and as a French trading post. In fact, Waukegan comes from the Potawatomi word for ‘fort’ or ‘trading post.’
Waukegan is the hometown of the late comedian Jack Benny. The Waukegan Historical Society exhibit, ‘Jack Benny: From Waukegan to Hollywood,’ at the Jack Benny Center for the Arts, contains photographs, autographs items, programs and information regarding his childhood in Waukegan.
Waukegan is the home of most of the government and judicial buildings for Lake County Illinois. The Genesee Theatre home to many musical and theatrical productions. Waukegan is only a ten minute drive from Six Flags Great America.
